Atanas Ourkouzounov is one of most interesting personalities in the Bulgarian contemporary music. Guitar player and composer with a rich musical background, he is considered one of the main authors in the domain of the new generation’s music for guitar.
The wide inspiration of his musical language is the result of a subtle use of the forms, an endless and original rhythmical search and a colour work which leads the guitar to explore new territories and sonorities.
Atanas Ourkouzounov grew up in Sofia, Bulgaria, where he began guitar studies with Dimitar Doitchinov. Starting from 1992, he continued his studies in France with Arnaud Dumond, Alexandre Lagoya and Olivier Chassain. He studied guitar, chamber music, analysis, ethnomusicology and improvisation at the Paris Conservatory and graduated in 1997 with unanimous vote the first prize in guitar.
As composer he has been awarded with several prizes (« Michele Pittaluga – Città di Alessandria » – Italy, 1997 – ; « Paolo Barsacchi » – Italy, 1997 – ; « Il fronimo – Suvini Zerboni » – Italy, 1998 – ; « Ciudad de Montevideo » – Uruguay, 1998 – ; « Carrefour mondial des guitares » – Martinique, 1998-).
Ourkouzounov has written over 100 works for guitar—solos, duos, trios, quartets, instrumental ensembles, and five concerti—a number of which have won important prizes, and a majority of which have been published by leading publishers (Doberman-Yppan , Henry Lemoine , Editions Fougeray).
Several internationally recognized performers have played his works. Among them Zoran Dukic, Denis Azabagic,Goran Krivokapić, Scott Tennant, Shin-ichi Fukuda, Alberto Vingiano, Eduardo Isaac, Pablo Marquez, Antigoni Goni, Judicaël Perroy , Edin Karamazov , Duo Gruber-Maklar, Miscelanea Guitar Quartet, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Thibault Cauvin, Dimitri Illarionov, Jérémy Jouve , Gabriel Bianco , Carlos Perez, Juan Carlos Laguna , Thomas Muller-Pering, Duo Palissandre, Ensemble Nomad, Kostas Tosidis, Dimitris Kotronakis, Patrick Kearney, etc.
Atanas Ourkouzounov performs widely as soloist and with the Japanese flautist Mie Ogura. In addition to ten CDs on which Ourkouzounov plays, more than 60 CDs of his music performed by others are currently available.
Ourkouzounov is also in demand as a teacher and juror at conferences and conservatories in Europe, USA and Japan and he holds a full-time position at the Conservatoire “Maurice Ravel” in Paris.
Guitariste et compositeur, Atanas Ourkouzounov est considéré comme l’un des auteurs pour guitare les plus importants de sa génération. Influencé par une formation riche et variée, ses œuvres interrogent les notions de forme musicale, les concepts de timbres et de couleurs, et proposent une recherche originale sur le rythme. Atanas grandit en Bulgarie et débute ses études avec Dimitar Doitchinov. Il s’installe par la suite en France où il étudie avec Arnaud Dumond, Alexandre Lagoya et Olivier Chassain. En 1997, il obtient un premier prix à l’unanimité de guitare au CNSMDP, établissement dans lequel il a aussi étudié la musique de chambre, l’ethnomusicologie et l’improvisation générative. Son catalogue comporte plus d’une centaine d’œuvres (pour guitare seule, duo, trio, quatuors, ensembles instrumentaux et cinq concerti) qui sont publiées aux éditions Doberman-Yppan, Henri Lemoine, Editions Fougeray. Ses pièces sont primées dans d’importants festivals : « Michele Pittaluga – Città di Alessandria » – Italie, 1997 ; « Paolo Barsacchi » – Italie, 1997 ; « Il fronimo – Suvini Zerboni » – Italie, 1998 ; « Ciudad de Montevideo » – Uruguay, 1998 ; « Carrefour mondial de la guitare » – Martinique, 1998. De nombreux interprètes majeurs de notre temps ont joué ses œuvres : Zoran Dukic, Judicaël Perroy, Denis Azabagic, Goran Krivokapić, Shin-ichi Fukuda, Jérémy Jouve, Scott Tennant, Eduardo Isaac, Pablo Marquez, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Thibault Cauvin, Dimitri Illarionov, Edin Karamazov , Gabriel Bianco, Thomas Muller-Pering, Duo Palissandre… En 2017, l’Ensemble Nomad crée son Broken Concerto à l’Opera City Hall de Tokyo. Atanas se produit seul sur scène ou accompagné de la flûtiste japonaise Mie Ogura. Sa discographie comporte dix disques dont quatre consacrés exclusivement à sa musique. En 2019, il fonde avec Mie Ogura et Petar Ralchev, virtuose bulgare de l’accordéon, un trio original puisant son inspiration dans la musique traditionnelle des Balkans. Il donne fréquemment des masterclasses en France et à l’étranger (Manhattan School of Music, Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg…) et est invité à siéger dans les jurys de concours internationaux (Guitar Foundation of America, International Guitar Competition Michele Pittaluga – Alessandria…). Il enseigne actuellement au Conservatoire « Maurice Ravel » du 13ème arrondissement de Paris.
１９７０年ブルガリア生まれ、フランス国籍を持つギタリスト、作曲家。ソフィアの名教師ディミター・ドイチノフのもとでギター学び、その才能をアルノー・デュモンに見出されてフランスに移住。ギターを始めてわずか５年でパリ国立高等音楽院に入学を果たす。１９９７年、審査員全員一致の一等賞にて卒業。この卒業試験で自作曲を演奏し、審査員であったローラン・ディアンスより絶賛される。
ブルガリアの民俗音楽に多大な影響を受け、ギターを始めると同時に作曲し始めたという生来の作曲家であり、イタリアのアレクサンドリアコンクール作曲部門、パオロ・バルサッキ作曲コンクール、ウルグアイのモンテヴィデオ作曲コンクールをはじめ、世界のコンクールに多数入賞、作品はカナダのドーベルマン、フランスのルモワーヌ、イタリアのズビニ・ゼルボニ、アメリカのメルベイなどより出版されている。
演奏、作品の両面で福田進一、スコット・テナント、パブロ・マルケス、カルロ・ドメニコーニなど数多くの著名ギタリストから絶大な支持を得て、世界中のギターフェスティヴァルに招聘される。２００３年イタリアのkleレーベルより自身の作品集を、２００６年には福田進一氏プロデュースの「ヴァリエ」レーベルより日本デビューCD「レジェンズ」をリリース、その後はフルーティスト小倉美英とのデュオで「ムーヴメント」「ファルス・クラシック」（label H＆S) を、また自身のギターソロの作品を集めた「オートポートレイト」(Doberman-Yppan) をリリース。
トレードマークであるキャッチーで親しみやすいメロディーや強烈なブルガリアン・リズムはそのままに、より現代的、多元的で豊かな作風に変化した近年では、ギターを取り巻くより大きな室内楽編成に目を向け、２００２年JTホール室内楽シリーズにて福田進一氏により室内協奏曲が初演、また２００８年パリのアントニー・ギターフェスティヴァルで林欣弘氏の委嘱により書かれたギターコンチェルトを自ら初演し、新境地を開いた。
現在パリ市立１３区モーリス・ラヴェル音楽院ギター科、室内楽科教授として 後進の指導に情熱を注いでいる。
